Foetal Medicine
The Department of Foetal Medicine provides specialised care for the unborn baby, focusing on the early detection, diagnosis and management of foetal abnormalities and high-risk pregnancies. Our services support expectant mothers through every stage of pregnancy, with particular expertise in screening for chromosomal disorders, structural anomalies, growth restriction, multiple pregnancies, Rh-incompatibility and other complex maternal-foetal conditions. We work in close coordination with Obstetrics, Paediatrics and Neonatology to ensure the safest possible outcome for both mother and baby.
Procedure Details:
- First Trimester (NT) Scan: An 11 to 14-week ultrasound that measures nuchal translucency to screen for Down syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities.
- Anomaly (TIFFA) Scan: A detailed mid-pregnancy ultrasound performed between 18 to 22 weeks to evaluate the baby’s anatomy and detect structural abnormalities.
- Foetal Echocardiography: A specialised ultrasound that assesses the structure and function of the baby’s heart to detect congenital cardiac defects before birth.
- Foetal Doppler Studies: Assessment of blood flow in foetal and placental vessels to monitor babies with growth restriction or high-risk pregnancies.
- Growth & Well-being Scan: Serial ultrasounds in the third trimester to monitor foetal growth, amniotic fluid and placental health.
- Invasive Prenatal Diagnostic Procedures: Procedures such as Amniocentesis and Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) for definitive diagnosis of genetic and chromosomal disorders.
- Genetic Counselling: Pre-test and post-test counselling for couples with abnormal screening results, family history of genetic disorders or previous affected pregnancies.
- High-Risk Pregnancy Management: Coordinated care for pregnancies complicated by hypertension, diabetes, recurrent pregnancy loss, multiple gestation or Rh-isoimmunisation.
The Foetal Medicine Department is committed to providing expectant parents with accurate prenatal information, advanced diagnostic services and compassionate counselling, ensuring the best possible care for both mother and baby through a multidisciplinary approach.
